Meet the founder of Amy Wilson Interiors
My name is Amy I am a mother of 3 from Leeds and an eternal multi-tasker and goal setter (some say, dreamer). Amy Wilson Interiors is a business with a mission to create joyful, thoughtful designs that enhance the lives of the people that come into contact with it.
What’s the most common problem your customers approach you with?
Layout- people are often so attached to the expected ‘normal’ layouts that this becomes an obstacle to creativity. I work hard to demonstrate the options for layout that, rather than being normal, work best for the people who will occupy and use the space.
What inspired you to launch your business and what is the end goal?
I was inspired to launch my business following my experience in Interior Design Masters Season 2 for the BBC. I met some incredibly talented people and the journey taught me a great deal whilst also giving me a much-needed boost to my self-confidence. It challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone and made me realise I was not finished exploring Interior Design as a serious business direction.
How do you set yourself apart from other businesses in your industry?
I hope I set myself apart by listening. I do not want to be the kind of designer that shoehorns their style into a client’s brief. I take time to really understand my clients- what motivates them, how they live and work in the spaces they occupy and what they really love and are drawn to. I place huge importance on the power of listening.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as an entrepreneur?
To learn from others. Never assume you are a completed offering –learn from your peers and don’t be afraid to ask for help and advice. It shows an appetite to be better and grow.
Do you have a morning routine or ritual to get your day started on the right foot?
Where possible a run is the preferred way to start my working day but in reality, it more often begins with a school run instead. I wish I could say that I had a winning routine but in truth as long as there is green tea, some fresh air and music I am good to go!
What are your top tips for entrepreneurs wanting to get their business out there?
If you are striving to get your business seen – spend time understanding your target audience. You need to know as much as possible about them- what they love, what they hate, what they buy and then get planning. Create a communication plan that answers the questions and problems of your target audience. Find different ways to inform and entertain them so that they really begin to engage with your brand.
What plans do you have for Amy Wilson Interiors over the next two years?
I plan to continue learning and move towards more commercial work than residential so I can really share my passion for marketing and building brands with my Interior Design clients. I am also looking forward to collaborating with other designers on future projects.
What’s the single most important decision that you made, that contributed to your business?
The single most important decision was simple- to just get started. I spent an awful lot of time previously thinking and procrastinating. The moment I announced I was launching and it was out there in the public domain I had to keep going and moving forward. There was no more time for ‘what ifs?’ and deliberating - it was time to deliver.
What’s the most important question entrepreneurs should be asking themselves?
Have I got something unique to offer and say? The sector you are in may not be unique but can your angle and the message you communicate offer something new? Can you shake up an existing market with your style of marketing- are you being disruptive?
What would be your top marketing tip, to grow a business that is niche?
Know your audience. Be clear of who they are how to communicate with them. The next step is to create brand loyalty by ensuring the best customer experience- if the whole journey from start to finish is easy and pleasant you will earn loyalty which is what niche businesses are built on.
What social media channel would you say has worked the best for your business and why?
Instagram is the reason I started my business and continues to give me a great platform to showcase my work. It is a creative visual platform so perfect for Interior Design but it is worth considering that many of the people on there are simply looking for inspiration or in a similar industry so unlikely to become your clients. Therefore I understand the value of an up-to-date website and client recommendations.
Any moments where you thought you’ve bitten off more than you can chew?
Building a new business requires time and dedication which can often be at the cost of family and a social life. It is important to find a good work/life balance which is something I have been guilty of struggling with in the past.
What do you think gives brand longevity?
This is something I have focussed on extensively with my clients in my previous business as a Marketing Consultant. I believe that brand longevity relies on a thorough and regular review of your business vision and direction. Having a true sense of your brand’s purpose and your role in delivering the vision is key to ensuring that your business does not lose its’ way or get distracted. Brands built on hard work and passion have to be balanced with strategy and profit- you cannot have longevity without any of these things.
